What are Patent Drawings ?

Patent Drawings are used in patent application, illustrating different aspects of invention which will be produced to the different patent jurisdictions.

There are certain rules for making patent drawings which is assigned by different government agencies like US, UK, EU, India and other jurisdictions. These rules includes paper size, format, the color of the drawings, margins, numbered and referred size.

Rules for making Patent Drawings -

  • The drawings should be done in black and white, in some cases color is needed to illustrate the invention.
  • The scale of the figure is large enough to understanding the invention, if needed another page should be use in case of overcrowding of illustrations.
  • Every page of patent drawings includes the title of the invention, inventor’s name, application number, figure and page number.
  • Paper used for patent drawings must be in good form, free from any marks. Acceptable paper size DIN Size A4, 8.5 by 11 inches (210 by 297 mm).
  • Margin used in patent drawings – from top and right side it should be 1 inch (25 mm), from bottom and left side of the page it should be10mm and 15 mm.
  • Contain all necessary views to show the invention like plan, elevation, section, exploded, orthogonal or perspective views.
